Artist’s Statement

NIGHT AND DAY

Night-time sets the stage for many of my paintings in this show. Darkness creates a new world. Instead of focusing on the exterior, you are drawn into the interior, given a glimpse of what is happening inside. The lights become interesting shapes. They change the colors of the interiors and only partially illuminate the outdoor spaces. After seeing the Edward Hopper Exhibit in Chicago last year, I began to look at familiar scenes in Madison in a new way and decided to do a series of urban night-time paintings. I was inspired to do the first two paintings when dining with friends one evening at their condo off the square. We went out on the balcony. Looking down, I could see endless possibilities developing on the sidewalk and streets below. Sometimes people hurried in anticipation of the night ahead; sometimes a cashier appeared alone in the night. Everywhere short stories were unfolding. I was amazed at the variety of colors produced by the street lights, store lights and interior lights. They illuminated each scene, almost as if on stage.

ARTIST Statement

The work is in the carving assemblage tradition with the added pleasure of applying paint on wood. There is a concern with sculptural form and painting the work as if it were a canvas. The figures are based on dreams, reality and imagination. There is not a lot of concern with accurate depiction but more an attempt to describe grace and spirit.

Ecologies: Nature & Nurture
New Watercolors by Helen Klebesadel

“the destruction of land, and the living things upon it, is wrong”
Aldo Leopold

Helen Klebesadel is concerned with how our actions have unintended effects in quiet places of consequence. The watercolors in her July exhibition at the Grace Chosy Gallery will address visual concerns that run the gamut from careful study to poetic, symbolic and sometimes political representations of nature. Concerned
with the fact that for many in our culture nature has become an abstract concept
the themes in her work seek to remind her audience that nature is interdependent and interconnected, as are we.

Klebesadel’s paintings will offer the viewer aesthetic encounters aimed at connecting them with the sensual essence of nature, with the aim of encouraging a sense of care and connection with the natural world that leads to action. Helen knows that our deepest connections are developed through direct contact with nature, but contends that art can ‘re-present’ nature and evoke a desire to experience more of the outside world. Her paintings subjects will include the amazing lace made by winter branches against a cold blue sky: the casual erotic of some wildflowers; the ever-watchful presence of the birds; the plight of bees, and the interdependence of species in healthy ecosystems. The paintings are created as a lure to remind of our personal connections to nature, understanding that the more we love something the less likely we are to allow it to be destroyed.
Klebesadel is encouraged by the everyday wonders of the natural world as well as by the many ways humans seek to understand, nurture, and protect our earth from destroy it through neglect and misuse. This exhibition offers the artist’s thinking about the interconnectedness and interdependence of ecosystems and
about our human nature.

Ecology is:
• a complex science concerned with mutual relations of living organisms and with the relations of these to their habitat.
• the study of the distribution and abundance of organisms
• the study of ecosystems

Biographical Statement

My passion for creating art took hold in my early teens when my drawing and mixed media work won awards in national student-art competition. My creative interests shifted to photography during my twenties and my photographs were sold nationally.

Travel, another passion, sparked an interest in the geological and cultural forces that shape our landscapes and led to my formal studies in geography and cartography at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Through these studies, I was introduced to interactive media and information design—the foundation for my work on academic projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education, and on commercial projects that received some of the highest awards in the industry such as a New Media Invision Award, PC Magazine’s Top Ten CD of the Year award and inclusion in Graphis I: A Compiliation of New Media Design (NY: Graphis Inc.).

I now reside in Madison, Wisconsin where I operate Carta StudioWorks with my wife, Paula Oeler.

Artist Statement 2010

The photographic works I create evolve through layered complexity to express remembered landscapes; to explore the human condition; and to plumb the emotive power of color, form, and texture.

Although my images are constructed entirely of photographs, my art is not created by composing a view through a camera’s lens. Instead, I use what the camera records to compose what my mind sees. To accomplish this, I use a digital camera to ‘sample’ light, color, and texture and then use many hundreds of these samples to construct each image.

My work is influenced by the atmospheric landscapes of Steglitz, Steichen, and Hinton and the experimental work of artists such as Moholy-Nagy, Bruguiere, Corpron, and Man Ray. Following the currents of these influences, I create digital images that employ a painterly rather than documentary aesthetic because it is the image in my mind that I pursue through my work.
