Artist’s Statement:

Nature Inside Out
Recent Watercolors by Helen Klebesadel

It is not half so important to know as to feel. -Rachel Carson

When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I
want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they
have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. -
Georgia O'Keeffe

I believe in God, only I spell it Nature. -Frank Lloyd Wright

Some of my family members have commented that I seem to be deeply influenced by the large rose wallpaper that covered the walls in the rural Wisconsin farmhouse where I was raised. It is true that I am endlessly fascinated by the everyday wonders of nature as well as by the many ways humans have of bringing representations of nature into our lived environments.
This exhibition is a part of a longer journey that is a search for the core of our human connection to nature. It is a journey "from the inside out," that considers how our emotional connections to nature can be born through aesthetic sensibilities. I use my artist’’s eye to note and document the fleeting miracles of the everyday. Aesthetic encounters that connect viewers with the sensual essence of nature can be a potent means of promoting a sense of care for the natural world. While the deepest connections are developed through direct contact with nature, art can evoke the desire for more or recall past experiences of awe.
My visual concerns run the gamut from careful study to poetic, symbolic and sometimes political representations of nature. As a gardener I can be caught contemplating a single flower until time is lost, knowing the opportunity for study is fleeting. Wallflowers and related works in this exhibition echo the abundance of this year’’s summer garden and document my times of careful looking and meditation on the transient vulnerability of beauty, life, and
nature. These ‘‘wallpapers’’ create opportunities to consider the metaphor of fragile strength.

Increasingly, for many in our culture, nature has become an abstract concept. We have become divorced from direct contact with the natural environment unless it intruded upon us in the form of weather or its consequences. In the still live paintings included in the exhibition I work with well established artistic conventions, and try to twist them to my own ends. Still life has a long history of symbolic representation of nature to comment on the human condition. My still lives juxtapose decorative and living nature in domestic settings as I try to find a way to represent bringing ‘‘real’’ nature inside. Living nature will not acquiesce to abstraction. What does it mean that we cover our walls, our clothes, and our personal environments with representations of nature? How is it we are drawn to representations of nature but seem to be moving farther and farther from understanding ourselves as a part of nature; of knowing where our food, air, and water comes from; and of being responsible stewards for the earth?
Perhaps art can lead us back to nature.

ARTIST BIO

There is no definitive starting point to my artistic career. I don’t paint because I “want” to, I paint because I have to; it is who I am.
Different experiences in my life -work, travel, friends along the way -have all influenced my path as a artist.
For a time in college I worked as the curator for the university gallery. I led a group of students in choosing the artists who would show, arranging show schedules, hanging artwork, organizing the opening receptions and more. The experience gained and connections that I made during this time were incredible.
After college I traveled Europe with friends, taking in as much art as we could. Again, an incredible experience and a wealth of new art knowledge.
These, and millions of other inspirations, have brought me to this point in my artistic career, and are the basis for my work.

ARTIST STATEMENT 2008

My current body of work explores two of my artistic passions -typography and painting.
As a professional Graphic Designer I am immersed in the creative but regimented use of type on a daily basis. I incorporate these ideas into my encaustic paintings and create a unique contrast between the lose flow of paint against the rigid layout of text.
My work is a visual medley of memories; each piece a vivid recollection of a conversation or snippet of time. I incorporate the graphic punch of stenciled text as a represention of the words that we aren’t afraid to say to one another. The softer handwritten style embodies the things you wish you had the courage to say outloud. The brash use of splattering and texture create depth and intensity; each spot and drip another layer attesting to what has transpired.

Artist Statement

Denise Presnell-Weidner

My focus on landscape imagery began approximately 20 years ago when I moved to Wisconsin. What intrigues me about nature is vitality to transcend my analytical side and transport me to a purely visual state of being. When I am inspired by place, I can literally feel the shift in my brain take place. My desire to keep that sensation alive is what drives me to record that very moment and make it permanent either with pastels on paper or oil on canvas. I also began working with pastels approximately 20 years ago purely on a whim. My style of using pastels was driven by my desire to create a surface that echoes the movement of color and light when one is experiencing nature.
The moment is not static; therefore I choose to produce a surface that is difficult to rest your eyes on. It is difficult to rest your eyes on anyone place when you're walking through woods or along a riverbank - it seems to me my artwork should reflect that sensation. Having been seif-taught in the use of pastels,
I didn't really realize I was developing a unique style with the medium . I have since found out that most people blend their pastels on the surface of their paper and my style comes as a bit of a surprise to viewers.

The resulting effect of my technique is an image that blends and becomes more readable from a distance, yet diffuses and breaks apart as one nears the piece. One believes the image will come more into focus up dose, but instead, the opposite occurs. When I am working on a pastel or a painting, I am constantly moving back and forth from the easel- so I can see if the results of my labor make visual sense from afar. Although I do not deviate much from the color that inspires me in nature, another effect of using pastels to recreate the image is that there never seem to be an exact match between nature's color and the color of the medium. I find that satisfying because it causes me to find color that heightens the experience, rather than merely copy the experience. Even though I literally have hundreds of pastels -I am in a constant search for that one perfect, yet ever missing color .It's like a
poet searching for that perfect rhyme. But even this keeps the experience vital and hungering to continue in the act of producing art.

I have discovered I do not need to travel far for subjects that have this effect on me. I am within walking distance of some of my favorite locations - the bike trail that follows the highway between Sheboygan and Greenbush, the woods that surround the cemetery on the edge of Kohler and Sheboygan Falls.1 am only a bike ride away from the bridges on Highway Y, Rangeline Road and Playbird Road that provide an abundance of color, texture, reflection and light. The trails and woods in the Kettle Moraine State Forest west of my home are a bit further away, but I often take day trips in late fall to that area to photograph as much as I can. The variety in that landscape with its hills and trails creates an ever surprising adventure for me as I hike through areas that I have both been to and ones that are completely new to me. What is key is to return at different times of day, different weather conditions or earlier or later parts of the season. The changes that take place due to time and weather transform the area to an entirely different visual experience.

My personal taste in color is what drives me to produce imagery largely based in the fall with its deep reds, burnt oranges and golden trees. The space also opens up because of the lack of foliage.1n the spring and summer, there are larger, more solid forms that do not appeal to me. The color of early spring seem also to be limited especially around bright, light greens and not much variation beyond that. later summer can be nice, with the wildflowers and the beginning of changes in the color of the leaves. I do love variety in color.
