Statement

Captured by the Light

New paintings and drawings by Minnesota artist, Tom Maakestad.

Raised in rural Northfield in a family of artists among a community of farmers, Maakestad is deeply anchored to the Midwestern landscape and its moods.

“Light dictates our relationship with the land in many ways. In a drought we feel the austerity of the land and intensity of the sun. In normal or wet conditions light differs due to the moisture in the atmosphere and the variety of colors in the landscape. Thus our experiences and impressions of our surroundings differ depending on the light we encounter.”

Long intrigued by the relationship between agriculture and the natural landscape, Maakestad’s subjects include rolling hills tilled for planting, country roads and colorful marshlands set against large atmospheric skies. In recent years, Maakestad has participated in numerous plein air festivals, giving him a heightened awareness for the affects of weather and light on our landscape and in turn, on his paintings. His work is often begun in the field and finished in studio.

“Landscape as subject continues to interest me because it is an integral part of daily life here in the Midwest. This place where we live affects our livelihoods as well as our moods, imaginations and aesthetic awareness. In a sense, our lives are shaped by the landscape we inhabit and the climate we live in. Weather dictates our activities –– just as farmers plant in the spring and harvest in the fall, so it is with my compositions. I paint specific places in specific seasons.”

Inspired by a combination of artistic influences including the color relationships employed by Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko as well as the solitude and introspection of Edward Hopper’s landscapes, Maakestad’s compositions explore the changing palettes and subtle drama of the midwestern cycle of seasons.
