ARTIST'S STATEMENT Randall Berndt - 2011 “The painting impulse gets weakened if I get too verbal about things ... (George Tooker 1920- 2011) Recently deceased artist George Tooker, painter of figures luminous with existential dread and wonder, thought it best to let the work speak for itself- too much explanation takes away the magic. With that in mind I will say only a little (trying to keep the magic) about the paintings and
drawings in this exhibition because sometimes onlookers are curious about what might make
all this possible. Anyway I hope they are curious. The narratives of these works seem to be mostly set in the past - the comfort of memory, the romance of history - because today is in unpredictable flux and tomorrow could be full of nasty surprises. They are all self portraits of a kind, mixed up with stories that just appear in my sketchbook begging to become more finished pictures that are like illustrations* of what might occur in a truly innocent state of mind. Innocence is hard to come by in these times of double talking politicians, the disappearance of money and nature's retribution for our environmental follies. Maybe art can comfort us and also lure the angels of our better intentions to sit on our
shoulders at least while we spend time looking at it. Art is one place that our innocence and
imagination can roam free from the harsh realities that stalk us on a daily basis.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT Charles Munch - 2011 I live in the Driftless area of southwestern Wisconsin, high on a hill surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods and abandoned farm fields. Animals, both wild and domestic, are my nearest neighbors and most frequent visitors. Deer, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits, possums, and birds of every size wander or fly past my studio day and night. Their presence has often led me to meditate on humans' relationship with animals. Are we friends or enemies? Do they think about us? Is wild or tame better? Can we co-exist peacefully? Such thoughts have inspired paintings that I sometimes think of as Nature Icons images conducive to meditation on questions that may have no answer but are worth exploring. As I paint, these questions guide my reflections, which I hope are later shared by viewers of the paintings. I believe that the more deeply we explore our relationship with other animals and the rest of the natural world, the healthier the world will be. I use bright, clear colors and simplified shapes, attempting to present the subject in the plainest terms possible. I eliminate extraneous details, allowing room for the expression of emotion through the abstract elements of color, line, and shape. Forms that at first may be barely delineated are brought to pulsing life through vibrant color relationships and dynamic compositions. The goal is to create images which are even truer to my vision of nature than a realistic painting could be.
