Note:

Grace Chosy Gallery has the book, “Charles Munch, Dreaming In Color, Paintings 1971 - 2006" by Jody Clowes and Richard Ely. In it the authors chronicle Munch’s career from his start as a trained realist, in the tradition of early European painting, to his current approach of communicating through basic contours and
powerful colors. On display on each page is the creative journey of one of Wisconsin’s most fascinating artists - not only his travels over the canvas but also those around the world gathering knowledge and inspiration which would ultimately inform his work. Charles’ life is not only a personal composition, but in many ways traces an entire generation as it attempts to redefine social mores and attitudes while managing to adhere to the pragmatism and realities of modern 20th and 21st century life.

         STATEMENT ON THE ARTIST

Randall Berndt

Human/Nature

"I think I could turn and live awhile with the animals. . .they are so placid and self contained, I stand and look at them sometimes half the day long. " Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass 1855

"Through the years, I have learned that there is no harm in charging oneself up with delusions between moments of valid inspiration. " Steve Martin Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life 2007

The imagery in my art explores the interaction of humans with the natural world. This imagery is often presented in narratives that call up the question of what exactly that relationship is. I feel that interesting art must contain an element of mystery, something elusive and sought after along with some humorous detachment from overweening
utilitarianisms. Some part of the art experience has to be ineffable, beyond academic explanations, just as I believe our ultimate relationship to nature to be. But I also seek a feeling of naturalness, of image rightness along with the unexplained in these storied pictures.

Many of the goings-on in my art reflect a quest after that which exists beyond our everyday civilized and socialized lives. As a displaced country person, living mostly in the city now, I am often surprised by how much wildness shows itself in the midst of the busy urban hubbub. I have seen a Cooper's hawk pounce on a hapless sparrow right next to a sidewalk near the capitol building in downtown Madison. I have seen the unlikely, primordial opossum wobble past our front porch in the early spring snow and the screech owl perch in our apple tree in the full moon that rises over our backyard just as it does over the tamaracks in the north-country swamp.

Some of these works are blatantly romantic yearnings - deliberate archaisms, seeking after refuge from our overly organized lives, searching for rescue from business as usual and transport to the moonlit big pine woods with its secret campfire that invites dreaming where the sound of traffic is not heard. These paintings suggest, I hope, the
impossibly extravagant idea of going to live with the animals as proposed by Walt Whitman; oddly, they may be the result of valid inspirations conjured while walking those city sidewalks.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Charles Munch

Artist Statement

For many years I’ve been working with bright, clear colors and simplified shapes, attempting to express my feelings about nature and the relationships between natural elements. For instance, I may use a dynamic composition to convey turbulent weather or a character’s excited emotional level. A particularly brilliant pair of colors used to paint an animal may suggest its wild character. My goal is to create an image that is even truer to all my senses and emotions than a realistic painting or a photograph could be.

I live in the remote hills of southwestern Wisconsin. I’m often inspired by the fields and forest around me, but I seldom work from nature or even from a discrete memory of nature. Instead, my images come from imagination, from daydreaming about nature and about the cast of characters that inhabit it.

Most of my paintings are landscape based, but I’m still not exactly a landscape painter, maybe because I simplify so much that my landscapes are somewhat abstract. I paint people too, but I’m not a portraitist. I paint animals and I’m certainly not a wildlife artist. The people and animals in my paintings are all to some degree symbols. That is, they stand for larger groups of people or animals. And what seems to be happening in my paintings isn’t a true narrative. It’smore of an allegory because the story as a whole stands for a larger story with a similar structure, much the way a very specific dream can stand for a more general situation.

I especially like painting deer because they are a large mammal, common where I live, that can visually stand up to a human because it is nearly as large. But when I show a deer confronting a man, as I have in a recent painting, the deer stands for the whole world of animals. It’s just that a rabbit confronting a man wouldn’t work so well in a picture.

My paintings usually begin as vague ideas quickly set down in my sketchbook with a mixture of watercolor and crayon. If an idea intrigues me, I make another watercolor sketch or move on to a small oil painting. If I’m still interested after that, I go to a large oil painting and sometimes to a very large one. At each stage of development, I alter the composition, colors, and tones in an effort to make the painting truer to my feelings about the subject. When the painting is larger there’s more difficulty–but also more chance for satisfaction and fulfillment if I succeed.
That’s why I love to paint large.
