The genre of flower photography

I enjoy making photographs of flowers for a number of reasons. It is relaxing and a much more leisurely process than photographing the human figure or photographing on-site in the out-of -doors. Frequently, the flowers come from my garden, and, setting them up in my natural-light studio, I can watch them as the light shifts throughout the day. With my camera set on a tripod, it is easy to wait until see something good and then snap the shutter. Flowers do not have a problem holding steady in a pose, as I take my time to move my camera around them searching for the right shot.

The flower itself is such an obvious source of sensuous beauty - the colors and forms almost photograph themselves. I just look for the right angle, the right light, the right frame or composition. It feels to me like good practice of my craft.

Whenever possible, I do like to present a viewpoint that is unusual - such as the underside of the two yellow tulips.
I Find that the undersides of flowers are just as wondrous as the side that they usually present. There is also a symbolism in the number of flowers used in the frame, and with their positioning in relation to one another, they hint at almost human interrelationships.

These flower images were taken during a time period spanning about 12 years, 1991-2004. Lately, I am more drawn to photographing wild flowers and plants that I am finding in our Kettle Moraine forest area - those with equally unusual and noteworthy, natural forms. These are just being made, and will be available this fall.

Commercial Photography:

Between the years of 1991 and 2006, I have also worked in the varying fields of Commercial photography. I began with editorial photography, and later specialized in Architectural Photography. I am currently working on a project involving publication of a series of portraits. Working for magazines and corporations honed business skills and provided me with an education in the rights of photographers and intellectual property, that I did not learn
in graduate school for the arts. I found them to be quite an asset when applied to my original photography and have been lucky to pass these on to university students during my teaching experiences at Carroll College and MIAD (Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design).
