Artist's News:

May 24, 2011

Got some good news when I got back to the studio yesterday and thought I would share.
I had two prints (Theremin and Carlos)- images below -from my Electronic Music series accepted for the Digital Works national juried competition at LBIF (see info below).  Theremin is the print that won the Digital Arts Guild Award at the 51st International Exhibition at the Museum of the Living Artist of the San Diego Art Institute (4/16/11 thru 5/29/11).
The juror, Dr. Christine Paul is a well-known figure in the world of digital art ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiane_Paul_%28curator%29 ).

Biographical Information

Biographical Statement

My passion for creating art took hold in my early teens when my drawing and mixed media work won
awards in national student-art competition. My creative interests shifted to photography during my
twenties and my photographs were sold nationally.

Travel, another passion, sparked an interest in the geological and cultural forces that shape our
landscapes and led to my formal studies in geography and cartography at the University of Wisconsin— Milwaukee. Through these studies, I was introduced to interactive media and information design—the foundation for my work on academic projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education, and on commercial projects that received some of the highest awards in the industry such as a New Media Invision Award, PC Magazine’s Top Ten CD of the Year award and inclusion in Graphis I: A Compiliation of New Media Design (NY: Graphis Inc.).

Artist Statement

Artist Statement

My images suggest memories and impressions, referring to lands encountered, but unencumbered by form and detail. They offer views on a world filled with suggestion, mood and sumptuous beauty.
The technique I developed to create my work is experimental and is modeled after sampling
techniques used in the creation and synthesis of sounds for electronic music composition. This
technique allows me to create complex digital works that employ a painterly aesthetic to evoke the
richness and subtlety of memory.

I print my work with my wife, Paula Oeler, at Carta StudioWorks, our studio in Madison, WI. Each
print is offered in very limited editions.
