Biographical Information

Biographical Statement

My passion for creating art took hold in my early teens when my drawing and mixed media work won awards in national student-art competition. My creative interests shifted to photography during my twenties and my photographs were sold nationally.

Travel, another passion, sparked an interest in the geological and cultural forces that shape our landscapes and led to my formal studies in geography and cartography at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Through these studies, I was introduced to interactive media and information design—the foundation for my work on academic projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education, and on commercial projects that received some of the highest awards in the industry such as a New Media Invision Award, PC Magazine’s Top Ten CD of the Year award and inclusion in Graphis I: A Compiliation of New Media Design (NY: Graphis Inc.).

I now reside in Madison, Wisconsin where I operate Carta StudioWorks with my wife, Paula Oeler

Artist Statement

The photographic works I create evolve through layered complexity to express remembered landscapes; to explore the human condition; and to plumb the emotive power of color, form, and texture.

Although my images are constructed entirely of photographs, my art is not created by composing
a view through a camera’s lens. Instead, I use what the camera records to compose what my mind sees. To accomplish this, I use a digital camera to ‘sample’ light, color, and texture and then use many hundreds of these samples to construct each image.

My work is influenced by the atmospheric landscapes of Steglitz, Steichen, and Hinton and the experimental work of artists such as Moholy-Nagy, Bruguiere, Corpron, and Man Ray. Following the currents of these influences, I create digital images that employ a painterly rather than documentary aesthetic because it is the image in my mind that I pursue through my work.
