ARTIST STATEMENT

Jacob Stockinger

Jacob Stockinger an a long-time arts writer and critic for The Capital Times newspaper in Madison. He is a largely self-taught photography who started making pictures about 15 years ago. A member of the Madison Photography
Club, the Center for Photography at Madison and the Madison Art Guild, he has won many awards and has had his work exhibited at the former Madison Civic Center, the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Fyfe's Bistro and the Overture Center for the Arts. His portraits, landscapes and street scenes were also featured prominently in the Wisconsin Historical Society's book "Wisconsin Then and Now: The Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Re-photographing Project."
He believes that a photograph of a tree is photograph, not a tree, and that realistic art should have formal structure while abstract art can tell stories. He also believes that beauty takes many forms and exists empirically and
objectively in the world, much like a foreign language. Just because you may not understand a particular language doesn’t mean that other people don’’t or that the language doesn't exist.
