ARTIST STATEMENT

Gregory Schulte

In paintings, objects can transcend their existence as commonplace artifacts of daily life and become metaphors for human experience. This is the central theme of my work. Although my paintings often include figurative elements, even the still life arrangements are emblematic of human presence. Unusual combinations of subjects set in peculiar stage-like spaces create whimsical metaphors and mysterious narratives.

My work is certainly representational, but I avoid depicting subjects in a way that would simply reflect or merely document the observed world. My work presents subjects that are based on objective reality, but the final image is developed mostly through invention. Through the process of painting, I am searching for significance and meaning in the familiar and ordinary, trying to respond to life's encounters in a poetic way. The idiosyncrasics of my work are the result of an evolutionary development, with each work contributing to the next. New ideas fuse with previous discoveries, taking my work in unanticipated directions. Ultimately, I am trying to create alternate realities.I hope my work will invite multiple interpretations, while remaining mysterious and enigmatic.
