  ARTIST STATEMENT

Nature is written in symbols and signs.-- JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER

The symbols in my present paintings, along with the textures and the subdued colors, stem from fragments  ofmemories, memories of nature in its simplest quiet state, and the patina that nature and time impart to old wood, weathered stone, rusty metal and the like. I'm searching for the simplest and most natural way to express these memory fragments.

I favor abstraction as a more satisfactory form of expression, and a "spontaneous" style of painting allows for greater freedom than would a more controlled attempt at forcing the painting into a preconceived image. The many-layered process helps develope a sense of aging, history, and understatement.

My work attempts to present the viewer with questions rather than answers, possibilities and uncertainties rather than realities, and, hopefully, some of the curiosity and enjoyment of discovery that has made my search a never ending Journey.
