Katherine Rosing

Artist Statement

Walking through a forest I notice the rhythmic patterns of tree trunks against the color and texture of the forest and sky. The quiet patter of raindrops against leaves sharpens my awareness. Rippling reflections and flowing water in the streams and puddles focuses my gaze. For many years I have explored various means of abstracting these patterns, pondering the parallels between nature and human existence. The reduction to abstraction clarifies and focuses an idea, in stark contrast to the complexity and chaos of daily life, allowing both nuance and layers of interpretation. In my paintings, I push texture and color relationships while playing with different levels of abstraction. These abstractions yield vertical “scroll” paintings, suggesting flowing water and rhythmic forest panoramas of tree trunks seen from eye level. In recent work I have stepped closer to the individual tree, isolating and exploring its bark pattern and texture.

My painting process begins with a texture “drawing” using acrylic medium to develop the relief surface and pattern which forms the foundation of the painting. This is followed by many layers of color to form subtle relationships between texture, color, and light. I usually work on birch panel, but occasionally work on unstretched linen, incorporating the organic qualities of the strands at the edges of the painting. The scroll format is inspired by Chinese and Japanese landscape paintings which could be rolled and transported in a small bundle, yet have a large presence when displayed.
