Artist Statement and Bio - 2011

Joyce Koskenmaki - Biographical Statement

The relationship between marks and the spirit has fascinated Joyce Koskenmaki for the past fifty years. Trained as an abstract expressionist, her work has evolved into the shapes and images she now finds in the natural environment. The dark and light of the north woods inspires her. The animals she paints are metaphors for her own spirit.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally, received grants, residencies and awards. She has illustrated several books. Her work hangs in collections, corporate, academic and personal.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is about animals and nature.  There is something both iconic and metaphorical about what I do. Iconic, because I try to connect with the sacred aspect of it all, and metaphorical because the animals are expressing for me something that I couldn't otherwise say.  I feel myself inside of them.
