Artist Statement 2009

As someone whose artistic expression is firmly based in drawing, I find that printmaking, especially intaglio, provides me with the widest range of tools for my needs. I can be precise and controlled in my etchings and mezzotints, concentrating on the graphic quality of these techniques. Or in contrast, and to compliment this, the monotypes are more fluid, allowing the brushwork and color to define the image.

My still life images are built using everyday objects, most often using glass for its distortions and
reflections and combining these qualities with plants and pattern. I like to play with depth and light so sometimes I push the depth of the object against its background and other times I’m more interested in blurring the figure-ground aspect by playing with the pattern of shadows, objects and background as surface pattern.

Artist Statement 2006

Like most artists, the need to create is the overriding force and printmaking provides the
widest range to express this need. I can be precise and controlled in my etchings and mezzotints,
concentrating on the graphic quality of these techniques. Or in contrast, and to complement this,
the monotypes are more fluid, allowing the brushwork and color to define the image. The
monotypes are built slowly using light washes of etching inks to build and layer colors, usually
taking up to 40 runs through the press to create a unique print, a painting on paper.
My still life images are built using everyday objects, most often using glass for its
distortions and reflections and combining these qualities with organic material and pattern. The
focus is on the ordinary object and while my subject matter is reality-based, I do not attempt to
create a photo-realistic image. Rather, I try to take the image beyond itself and create a mood or a
feeling for the viewer. Although I sometimes like to interject personal imagery and humor in my
work, I want each viewer to come away with his or her own interpretation of what is seen,
whether it is a delight in the color or the mark-making, or a derived meaning in the imagery.
