Christine Herman

Artist Statement for the Threshold Series

Sometimes the kernels of new work are born through seemingly insignificant moments. This is how the ‘Threshold series’ began, while on a recent trip to Oregon. Walking in the rain, I was enchanted with oak moss lichen that had fallen from the trees to the forest floor. I found these small symbiotic organisms made of fungi and algae to be astonishingly beautiful. They spoke to me through their humble and delicate forms, offering an invitation for further appreciation of Nature in all her guises.
The last decade of my artistic journey has centered on the notion of outer landscape as mirror and metaphor of the inner landscape. I am as equally mesmerized gazing into the minute world of a seedpod as I am standing within an expanse of windblown prairie grasses. Whatever the contours of the land, the quality of light or the textures of particular rocks or plants that captivate me, it is the feeling of a place that I want to recall when I return to the studio.

The Threshold series includes twelve monotypes (6 of which are part of this exhibition) and is an expression of the familiar yet ethereal qualities of the natural world. It is also an exploration beyond the earthly threshold –– to another place or state of being. A threshold represents a kind of nexus, the veil between the worldly and the divine. As the late Irish scholar and poet John O’Donohue writes in ‘Beauty’, “to recognize and celebrate beauty is to recognize the ultimate sacredness of experience, to glimpse the subtle embrace of belonging where we are wed to the divine, the beauty of every
moment, of everything”. Ultimately, my desire is to create work that can be seen and appreciated over time and expresses the lyrical and immense beauty around me.
