Autobiographical note:
There is a problem with using the woodcut and wood engraving for satire. The woodblock is
such a powerful medium that even humorous images can often become very nasty and
grotesque when satirizing human behavior. It is often difficult to avoid connecting with
individual personalities.
I became concerned about the manner in which I was portraying society. So, in the great
tradition of Goya, Grandville and the Brothers Grimm, I began to use animals more often to
portray human foibles. Since my figures had often originated from bird and animal shapes
anyway, the change was perhaps to be expected. The animals now took on human
characteristics rather than the reverse .

Many of my prints are autobiographical. The caricatures are clearly someone else. However,
most of the other figures, whether they be warthogs, or jackasses, wrens, donkeys, or moose,
are usually me. At least I think of them that way so they become personal responses.
