The Goddesses : (Gregory, 97)
Fand (Pronounced: FAWN) - Pearl of Beauty, The Gentle One, Teardrop of Beauty - Matronae Aufaniae From a tale of the hero Cuchulain comes the image of emotional connectedness in the print. It is a portrait of two fairy or goddess sisters: Fand (Pearl of Beauty, Teardrop of Purity,) and Li Ban (Beauty of Women). The portrait details the emotional bond between them, a bond so absolute that when they take the form of magical birds that bond is visible as a golden chain. The sisters work together enlisting Cuchulain’’s help in a battle to keep control (Gregory, 497) |

Inislocha: The Lake Island in the Manannan’s Islands On the same delightful island Tadg and his men come upon yet another new kind of bird. The birds were eating “……very sweet smelling, and round purple berries, every one of them bigger than a man’s head, and beautiful shining birds eating the berries, strange birds they were, having white bodies and purple heads and golden beaks. And while they were eating the berries they were singing sweet music, that would have put sick men and wounded men to sleep……” (Gregory, 98. 10.) |
