Professional Artist's Experience

Art Critics Statement

Dean Jensen, art dealer and former art critic for the Milwaukee Sentinel recently stated:

"Coffman's watercolors are riveting because of all the alchemy he can perform with
mere colored water."

James Auer, art critic for The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel has written:

"The work is almost ethereally sensual. Great juicy swaths of oil paint repose in close
proximity to each other, with only the barest links to the landscape.

Pollock, Rothko, DeKooning, Reinhardt - these are names that come to mind. Yet this is
artmaking from the gut rather than from the history books.

Spontaneity rather than calculation seems to dominate the gallery's walls. Yet the work
is consistently balanced. In an era when film and video get most of the headlines,
Coffman has returned to pure painting.

Indeed, the newest - and largest - works being shown tend to dispense with the horizon
entirely. Coffman obviously has set sail in a new direction, into unfettered abstraction."
