ARTIST STATEMENT

The places I visit in my paintings are reconstructions of another time. They are amalgamations, the kind of blending or restructuring of place that our memories recall for us. While they are spawned from memories of my past and the people that were and are dear to me, I want very much not to make the narrative just a visual diary of personal events.

Light is the unifying element in all of my paintings; at it’s best it heightens the emotional level of the work. Light from an unseen source and the transition between night and day intrigue me. They can be both seductive and frightening. I am also interested in human scale in the environment, and context’s effect on objects and their meanings. Whatever the content, the paintings are emotional vignettes, rather than just formal landscapes. They represent small moments in time, an homage to place and memory.

While my artwork is a tool of self discovery, I work to balance the personal with a broader symbolism. They must be open enough for the viewer to bring his or her own experience to bear in interpreting the work. The work must not answer the questions it asks entirely. One of the things I enjoy most about hearing others comment on the work is the polar opposite interpretations a piece can have. I have heard the opinions of a single work run from bright hope and optimistic to the deepest sense of loss. Hearing that helps me come to understand the work and myself better.

Barry Roal Carlsen

A Short Biography
Barry Roal Carlsen was born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1980. He then moved to Madison Wisconsin to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. Carlsen graduated in 1983 with a Master of Fine Arts degree. Finding it hospitable, he has made his studio in Madison where he continues to live and work to this day. Carlsen divides time between his studio and a position as senior artist in the the UW Communications Office on campus three days a week. He will teach a course in Lithography the fall semester of 2005 at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Carlsen has received numerous fellowships and awards. His work has been exhibited nationally and in Europe. They are also found in many private, public, and corporate collections.

Carlsen’s home in Madison is shared with his wife of 23 years Marja Barger and one small dog. They have two children Carsten and Frieda. Carsten is a Sophmore at UW Platteville and Frieda is Senior at Madison East High School.

A few thoughts
I don’t see my work as formal landscapes. They capture a small moment in time. The images I paint are an homage to place, memories, people, and times spent with my family on trips to the north.

Technique
All works are oil on panel. Sizes range from 5” up to 5’ wide. All frames are hardwood (black cherry, poplar, oak or black walnut), and designed and built by the artist. Some works incorporate gilding in the frames or as a substrate under paint. Subject matter is derived from photos and memories collected and combined by the artist. Inspiration comes from areas near his Madison home as well as trips to the lakes and woods of northern Wisconsin.
