Artist's Statement 2009

I fabricate geometric constructions from reclaimed scrap steel (both carbon and stainless) using MIG and TIG arc welding processes. Pattern and balance are primary concerns in the mostly abstract work; the grid figures prominently in wall sculpture, while outdoor pieces incorporate cubes, spheres, icosahedra, pyramids, etc. I am fascinated by the subtlety and depth of surface texture and color achieved by welding and grinding, and by the energy of the process itself. I usually begin with only a vague idea of the final appearance of a piece, choosing material that suggests itself at the time and allowing the piece to grow in its own way. I try to convey a sort of
spirituality with my work; I find a certain peace and contemplativeness in these pieces, and it is my intent and hope that others find the same.

Steel Sculpture

Statement of Intent:
I intend to offer an experience that gives people a sense of both truth and mystery, of the wonder
inherent in even the smallest details of this world, and of the way that wonder and awareness can
bring one closer to the sacred undulations of the universe.

Biological Information

Born in Rapid City, SD in 1967. Moved to WI in fall of that year, first to Marinette then West
Bend, where I graduated from West Bend East H.S. in 1985. Started at Lawrence University
(Appleton, WI) that fall as a Music major (string bass) but switched to Art after my first term of
music theory. Took a leave of absence the first term of my sophomore year and completed a 3-
month Outward Bound course in northern Minnesota and southwest Texas. Returned in January
as Sculpture major, carved a totemic wood sculpture that was installed in Peabody Park, near the
Lawrence campus. Graduated with a BA in Art History in December of 1989. Traveled around
the West for 3 months, then moved to Milwaukee. Worked variously as bartender, bicycle
mechanic, arborist, railway steward, gardener, etc. In the summer of 1994 I took my first welding
class at MATC. Bought my own welding machine in spring 1995 and set up my studio in the
basement of the house I was renting. Continued study at MATC, then enrolled in the degree
program in fall 1995. Completed AAS in Welding Technology in May of 1996, earning the Lamp
of Knowledge award and a tool scholarship. Moved to Denver in July 1996, working various
welding jobs & making art in several garages and shops. Showed & sold work at several Denver
galleries and hosted Open House / Studio each fall. Left Denver in spring 2002, worked for
Colorado Outward Bound on river courses in Utah, first in Jensen near Dinosaur National
Monument in northeastern Utah, then in Moab in the southeast. Had two studios in Moab &
work in two galleries, sold art at Farmer's Market. Moved back to WI in January 2004, worked a
factory job and bought an old farmhouse on an acre & a half in October 2004. My studio is now
in a large metal barn where I can make all kinds of noise at any hour and I'm surrounded by fields
with two marshes nearby and sandhill cranes, redtail hawks, coyotes, whitetail deer, fox, kestrels,
etc. I am finally home.
